Stop Romanticising the Hustle

The hustle

Work harder. Do more. Push further. HUSTLE. Huge goals, flash parties, glitz, doing anything to make a buck…. wait, wha?

I see young people being drawn into the glamour of the hustle, shoulders pulled down gangsta style, giving you the proud side eye. It’s a cool thing, a desired state. Why? Looking through the various definitions of the word none of them are very flattering. Doing “anything” to make money; activities that border on illegal; and outdated dance from the 70’s… a “hustler” was someone who often disguised his/her skill in order to win at games of pool and poker. Street savvy? Yes. Trustworthy? Hell no.

I admire a good work ethic. Emulating a mentor who works efficiently and does the necessary to achieve a goal is commendable. That however is not hustling. Being a hustler tells me that your plan has tunnel vision and a quick fix aspect. Open yourself to the possibility that there are many ways to achieve a goal. Romanticising the hustle allows the option to skirt around the edges and not walk through the door of opportunity when it opens.

So how do you move out of hustle mode? Get planning. Get networking. Start serving rather than chasing the dollar. Move into flow, where there is no hustle, by eating right, sleeping right and living right. Get your brain in the game. Success has never been purely about making money. A successful lifestyle honours family, community, and self- money is usually the happy byproduct that enables a greater contribution this and to humanity.

Time to step away from the bravado of the hustle and into a practical system that actually works? Probably.

How can coaching help you? Get clear on your real goals. Develop a plan using your existing skillset and resources to get you there. Teach you the methods to have confidence without bravado, and polish your brand.

What is your purpose?

What are You willing to do to Grow?acorn-1030819_1280

Work hard. Get a plan. Have a process. Use good tools. Create a support system. None of this is rocket science and you can find this knowledge in any number of high end online courses and self help books. So why the low commitment of many who want to make use of self help products?

What is the actual work of growth? What makes coaching /books/prefab courses work for some and not others? My theory is based on my experience and those that I have personally witnessed. There is an image of an acorn in this link. Therein lies the secret. The acorn by it’s very form and identity is committedthrough it’s sole purpose, the only reason that it is in existence- to become a great oak tree. 100% committed. It doesn’t lie in wait for an opportunity for any other activity except to grow.

Humans are a little more complex. We grow up with scripts. We learn bad habits that need to be reprogrammed. We develop limiting belief systems. We accept defeat far too easily. We hesitate to believe in our ability to succeed and gain positive results. The Oak Tree knows that in order for trees to grow in different areas and have a great chance, it’s seeds have to be buried and spread far out from under it’s own shade. The seeds are spread by animals eating them, and storing a cache for later. So it gives up part of its precious season’s work to the squirrels. A necessary investment for long term propagation.

The little nut that gets buried for next season finds opportunity in sun warmed soil, never questions it’s purpose and sets forward in growth.  It does not hesitate under the right conditions. It does not forecast for storms, or fires, wars or drought, it merely sets forth growth with purpose.

Potential +Purpose+ Opportunity via positioning and Investment with total Commitment.  What stops you from growth?

What a coach does – and how it can help you

I get asked : What do you do? So let me explain-
I sit with clients and work out what their goals are by asking the questions they need to find their answers.
I advise them on a plan to keep positive even when they feel they’re breaking– Because I’ve been there and survived.
I show them how to believe in themselves even if they don’t know where to start.
I teach them that it’s possible to feel supported even when you have no resources, because I have been there.
I show them how to forgive themselves for their choices that may have yielded bad results, because I have had to.
Success is not a million dollars in the bank– although that would be great 😉
Success is getting up everyday when you feel scared and alone and exhausted, and going forward with a plan anyway, because you have no choice but to succeed.
Success is knowing that despite huge odds, you courage is greater than your mind numbing fear.
This is what I do for my clients. If you or someone you know, can benefit from this- please refer them to me and I will hold their hand and walk with them, because I know how hard it is to walk alone.
